Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has recently announced that by October 2 this year, Goa will be open-defecation free and every household will have a toilet facility. But in Ponda taluka, of the 19 panchayats, 18 are unaware of the households lacking toilet facilities in their respective areas, as per RTI information obtained from panchayats.

Only Kavlem panchayat has the exact data of houses having toilet facilities.

As per RTI information, there are around 42,259 houses registered with 19 village panchayats of Ponda taluka. But of the 19 panchayats, 18 do not have information regarding houses having toilet facility or even regarding houses with or without tap water connections. It includes Tivrem-Orgao, Priol, Querim, Volvoi, Bhoma-Adcolna, Betqui-Candola, Wadi-Talauli, Borim, Kundaim, Vere-Vagurme, Marcaim, Bandora, Shiroda, Panchwadi, Curti-Khandepar, Usgao, Durbhat and Bethoda panchayats.

Kavlem panchayat in Marcaim constituency has the data regarding houses with toilet facility and as per the data, of 1656 houses registered with it, 1480 households have toilet facility and 1320 have tap water connection in it.

When contacted, Ponda block development officer Prasiddh Naik confirmed that most of the panchayats in Ponda taluka do not have exact information regarding houses with or without toilet facilities. To get a clear picture of households with or without toilet facilities, Naik said the government is commencing grassroots-level survey in all the panchayat areas, adding, the government has selected women from various self-help groups to conduct door-to-door surveys regarding toilet facilities and this task will begin soon.

As per information, earlier construction work of toilets was undertaken by the PWD. But now, village panchayats will be given responsibility of constructing toilets and funds will be provided by directorate of panchayats.
