In the backdrop of the truck accident on Monday that claimed a life and with authorities failing to come out with concrete measures to prevent accidents on accident-prone stretch of Raia road despite repeated requests, around 150 residents of Ambora-Camorlim on Tuesday assembled at the accident site and issued a warning to government authorities to immediately rectify the faulty road.
Aggrieved residents also submitted a memorandum to the additional collector Venancio Furtado, who was present at the site, to widen the road at the sharp turn to avoid accidents. Furtado later assured to take up widening work on Wednesday.
The meeting was held in the presence of the deputy collector, mamlatdar, PWD engineers, electricity engineers, senior police officials, motor vehicle inspectors, sarpanch and panch members.
Furtado also said that he would hold a meeting with the panchayat members and seek their suggestions to resolve the issue. The suggestion made by locals to shift the electricity pole causing obstruction to traffic was accepted by the executive engineer of electricity department.
“There was absolutely no coordination between agencies involved in the rescue operation. The victims were left trapped for almost one and half hour costing a girl her life. All the flaws need to be corrected immediately else people would be forced to come on to the streets,’’ warned local panch Inacio Antao.
Locals including Jesus Romao and Tony Dias questioned the PWD engineers for ignoring representations made in the past to rectify the faulty road.
“How can a dozen memorandums with regard to the said road be ignored? Overloaded vehicles are allowed to move on this faulty and poorly engineered road and this has led to many accidents,’’ Romao asked.
Celso Dias demanded that the road stretch at the sharp turn be immediately widened. Locals also demanded that the transport department should check vehicles for overloading. “It seems the PWD is waiting for major accidents to happen and more people to lose their lives,’’ locals observed.
