With their pleas for closure of the PWD water pipeline service road falling on deaf ears, agitated residents of Raia and neighbouring Nuvem on Tuesday served a three-day deadline on the PWD to either close the road or face a hunger strike.
They further demanded that locals should stop selling their land to migrants, while demanding action against the illegal structures that have come up in the locality.Agitated residents assembled at Manora-Raia bordering Nuvem on Tuesday evening and demanded the immediate closure of the water pipeline service road.
They lamented that the PWD has completely ignored the demand of the local residents over the last couple of months.Anthony Barbosa made a forceful plea to the authorities to close the service road by re-installing the gate.
Saying that the migrants have taken advantage of the pipeline service road, Barbosa demanded action against the structures housing the migrants in the area. A resident of Nuvem, Domingo Fernandes supported the demand of the Manora residents by demanding the immediate closure of the service road.
“Plying of heavy vehicles on the service road could damage the water pipeline and affect the houses of the local residents. The road should be closed immediately”, Domingo added.Anthony Fernandes said the PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar had assured to close the service road, but lamented that local PWD officials have not complied with the minister’s directions.
He demanded action against the PWD engineers who have been playing with the sentiments of the local population, while demanding the closure of the pipeline service road.
