Sarpanch of Aquem-Baixo, Siddesh Bhagat, on Friday, said he transplanted the paddy along with the Aquem-Baixo farmers to encourage them in farming and to know the ‘ground difficulties’.
Speaking to this daily, the young and dynamic sarpanch said, “I want to revive the Farmers Club of Aquem. The local farmers have several ground-level difficulties, including the labour crisis, and this I came to know only when I entered the paddy field with the farmers to work with them. Many farmers are illiterate and hence they need guidance on the various schemes available.”
He said that it is high time the elected representatives — panchas and sarpanchas, promoted the farming in a big way as there is a scope for agriculture, and several Goans are compelled to take up agriculture as occupation, more so, with the mining being closed in the state.
Bhagat said that the Minister for Agriculture Vijai Sardesai should meet the farmers through their respective farmers’ clubs and other organisations after collecting the details of the local farmers from the respective ZAOs.
“There is a need to identify the genuine farmers to pass on the schemes to him or her. And, this has to be done by the Agriculture Department with the help of panchayats and municipalities,” he added.
