On the back drop of the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court judgement brushing aside the notification by the government exempting stone crushers to operate sans conversion sanad, the Sao Jose de Areal villagers union has demanded immediate closure of all 43 stone crushing units in the village as they do not have the conversion sanad.

The president Freddy Travasso said the union fought a long and hard battle which lasted for nine years against the government’s decision to exempt stone crushing units to operate without conversion sanad, adding that the union will continue its fight against illegal notifications of the government in future.

He charged that the 43 stone crushing units in the village are like a time bomb and people are suffering due to dust pollution, adding that none of the units have conversion sanad and hence demanded immediate closure of all the units.

He said that the court had directed the collectors of south and north Goa to identify the stone crushing units operating without conversion sanad and issue notices to the stone crushing units calling upon them to either place on record the conversion sanads or give them a stipulated time to apply for the same within six weeks.

He charged that the notification was issued during the term of Digambar Kamat adding that there is a multi-crore scam involving the directorate of factories and boilers in the operation of stone crushing units adding that the union will get to the bottom of the scam and expose those involved.

He said the stone crushing units have been violating all norms and guidelines as a result there is wide-spread dust pollution in the village while there is also heavy movement of trucks due to the stone crushing units.

He stated that it is impossible for the units to get conversion sanad as they are operating in comunidade land.

The union demanded that the collector should immediately enforce the high court order as the units had nine years to prepare and comply with the norms and get the conversion sanad adding that the union would also be writing to the village panchayat over violation in the license terms.
