Agitated residents of Raia on Monday blocked the Arlem-Raia road on Monday for some time in protest against the bad and unmotorable road condition.Vehicular traffic was disrupted as the residents took to the streets to demand early repair to the damaged road and save the motorists from hardships and inconveniences.
Armed with placards, the residents questioned the government’s haste in implementing the helmet rule when the Arlem-Raia has virtually become a death trap for motorists.
What has agitated the local residents is the callous attitude of the authorities to repair the road on a war footing. A letter written by Jeronimo Colaco and local residents to the district Collector, South had highlighted the plight of motorists on the Arlem-Raia stretch of the road, but in vain.
In the letter, the residents had complained about the damaged condition of the road and the accidents that have occurred along the stretch in recent times.
They had complained to the Collector over the long delay in restoring the road for smooth flow of vehicular traffic.
The Raia Civic and Consumer Forum had in 2011 suggested a host of measures to make the State Highway SH-05 safe.
Jesus Romao told Herald that though the Forum had suggested a host of measures, the authorities have failed to put a system in place to curb accidents on the accident prone road.
