Assagao panchayat has started with door-to-door collection of dry and wet garbage in its jurisdiction. The village has around 1700 houses, and the issue of garbage disposal had remained unresolved for a long time.
Over the years, the villagers have been demanding with the panchayat to initiate measures to ensure that the village becomes free from garbage.
The village has been witnessing garbage being dumped along its roadsides.
Finally, the panchayat body led by sarpanch Jallindra Gaonkar has succeeded in starting with door-to-door garbage collection.
A contractor has been identified and entrusted with the garbage collection work in the panchayat on a daily basis.
The panchayat has also identified various locations in the village where garbage is being dumped rampantly.
Gaonkar informed that “this for the first time that garbage will be collected in the village on a daily basis. We have appointed a contractor on a trial basis for a period of two months for the collection of garbage, and his workers would be visiting each household and collect dry as well as wet garbage.”
He further informed that “we have undertaken awareness drive using loudspeakers as to how important waste segregation is and how it should be done. Besides we have also circulated flyers on segregation of garbage among the locals.”
“Besides the disposal of garbage generated in the village, we have the problem of disposing garbage which is being dumped along the roadsides. In this regard, we have identified black spots which will be cleared by the contractor on a regular basis,” he added.
