Bastora panchayat on Friday conducted an inspection of a low-lying field where unknown persons have illegally chopped mangrove trees.
The mangrove swamp in question is along the Mapusa-Moira road near a saw mill, which comes under Santa Cruz-Moriar ward of Bastora panchayat.
This daily had carried a report on Thursday about the illegal cutting of mangrove trees. Cutting of mangroves is illegal as these trees are declared as protected species under Preservation of Tree Act.
On Friday, sarpanch Savio Martins along with panchayat secretary Smita Parab conducted a site inspection. Martins said that “it is a bandh area. We are in the process of identifying the owner of the land and subsequently a notice will be issued.”
