Bastora panchayat which is struggling to tackle the garbage menace has come with a unique idea to keep a check on those dumping garbage along the roadsides in the village. Sarpanch Savio Martins has been working out new ways to keep a check on defaulters. Recently the panchayat has installed two CCTV cameras at Boa vista.
Savio Martin said, “Garbage is being dumped along the roadside and it has become a major issue inspite of appealing to people not to do so. We have installed CCTV cameras to catch the defaulters. During the panchayat body meeting it was decided to rotate the camera at various spot where garbage is dumped without informing anyone so that the defaulters are caught”.
He further added that “those who are caught on camera dumping garbage will be booked by the panchayat secretary under law and even an FIR can be lodged with the police”.
Another initiative which has been taken by the panchayat is distribution of around 1000 durable bags for storing dry garbage which would be collected by the panchayat on a daily basis from October 15.
Sarpanch Savio Martins informed that the panchayat is facing obstacles in the management of garbage due to a shortage of funds hence the panchayat is first starting with dry garbage collection. “We will be soon writing to the state government requesting to provide additional financial assistance for management of garbage “added Martins.
