The villagers of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim, on Tuesday, raised strong objection to the deployment of a security guard to man the entrance gate of starred hotel project site at Arossim, claiming that the case over the hotel project is sub-judice.

Sources said that the agitated villagers claimed that the project promoter cannot deploy a security guard as the case (matter pertaining to the NOCs from the concerned authorities to build hotel project at Arossim is not clear) is sub-judice.

The villagers also raised strong objection to the hotel project during the gram sabha that was held on Sunday.

The Verna police personnel led by PI Ninad Deulkar and executive magistrate Mormugao Vimod Dalal rushed to the site and brought the situation under control.

Verna PI Deulkar and executive magistrate Mormugao Dalal pacified the agitated villagers and waited at the site till the crowd dispersed from the entrance gate of the project site.

The gram sabha of the Cansaulim-Arrosim-Cuelim (CAC) held on Sunday had witnessed noisy scenes as the villagers protested against the panchayat members for ‘supporting’ a seven star hotel project at Arossim.

The CAC sarpanch Martha Saldanha abruptly stopped the gram sabha following the ruckus by the agitated gram sabha members, and asked the police to intervene.

The gram sabha members were opposing the seven star hotel project at Arossim.

They questioned the sarpanch and other panch members for granting permission for the project and asked them whatever decisions taken by the earlier panchayat body are binding on them or not.

The gram sabha members contested that whatever explanations given about the issuance of permission for the project given by the sarpanch were not relevant.

Saldanha, while speaking to media, said that the panchayat has no powers to stop the project as the project proponent has the necessary permissions from the concerned authorities.
