The vacant post of the Carmona sarpanch is set to be filled on October 21 after the directorate of panchayat bows down to the pressure created by the villagers of Carmona demanding that the vacant post be filled immediately. The post had fallen vacant on September 10 after former sarpanch Lavita Dias had stepped down on health grounds.
The presiding officer for the election M Parwar in a letter issued to the panch members called for a special meeting on October 21 at 10.30 a.m at the panchayat office.
The development attains significance as the post of sarpanch has been reserved for women and all eyes will be on Devina Rodrigues and Sandra Fernandes are the front runners for the post however with the seven-member panchayat split in the middle elections could head for a close and exciting finish.
Meanwhile, the villagers have pinned hope of finally getting a people’s sarpanch for the village who will stand up for the purpose of the village while the acting sarpanch Orlando D’Silva continues to face widespread criticism for mishandling the Raheja issue. The villagers pointed out that the acting sarpanch being an experienced elected representative should have guided the other panch members instead he misguided them on the Raheja issue and went ahead with granting the construction licence.
The villagers had earlier submitted a memorandum to the director of panchayats after they took a strong delegation marched to Panaji to press for their demand. The villagers along with Benaulim MLA also had a series of talks with the director over the issue pertaining to the panchayat.
