Chaos and confusion ruled supreme at the Carmona gram sabha after nearly three hours of debate to confirm the minutes of the previous gram sabha as villagers grilled the panchayat members on the Raheja project.

The gram sabha also passed resolutions objecting to mobile towers proposed in the village while passing another resolution to reject the Regional Plan 2021 since the suggestions sent by the village panchayat in 2011 were not incorporated.

The gram sabha which saw a large turnout of villagers grilled the panchayat members on the Raheja project and their failure to respond to the objections raised by the villagers prior to issuing the construction licence.

Putting a strong defence the sarpanch Sandra Fernandes hit back saying that the matter if need be can be challenged in court.

The issue has been dragging on for 8 years and it has to end somewhere, said the sarpanch, adding that the TCP report was placed at the general body meeting and the panchayat had written to the TCP, however they responded saying that the file is with the government.

The villagers tried to pass a resolution demanding that the entire panchayat steps down if they do not have the capacity to save the village. The gram sabha was halted briefly after the president of the Carmona villagers forum, Succoro Miranda took ill and complained of chest pain, he was later shifted to a hospital.

After arguing for three hours the minutes was finally passed however a proposal of developing an open space became an area of contention with villagers split over development of open space for children’s park. While some wanted that a children’s park be developed at the community centre others wanted the proposal to be passed.

On the regional plan the gram sabha passed a resolution demanding the scrapping of the RP 2021 if the suggestions raised by the villagers are not accepted.

The gram sabha also rejected the proposal by two mobile companies to set up towers in the village citing high radiation risk and decided not to allow mobile houses in private property around residential houses.
