Carmona gram sabha that was held on Sunday witnessed some noisy scenes after the villagers took strong objection to the village panchayat granting NOC for converting a residential complex into a resort even as they jumped on the bandwagon to oppose the nationalisation of rivers.
The gram sabha members questioned the authority of the village panchayat in granting a licence to convert a housing project into a resort.
Sarpanch Sandra Fernandes informed the villagers that the decision was taken in the best interest of the village and it was a collective decision of all the panchayat members.
She said that the gram sabha members could collect a copy of the panchayat body decision, however, refused to entertain questions on the technical aspect of the permission after the villagers sought to know under which Section of the Panchayatiraj Act the panchayat granted the permission when there is no proper infrastructure in place. The gram sabha also unanimously resolved to oppose nationalisation of rivers in the state as “it will threaten the livelihood of locals.”
Further, the gram sabha passed another resolution demanding underground low tension cabling as the electricity poles along the roadside are posing threat to the motorists
The villagers pointed out that the road widening carried out during the BRICS summit has ‘stretched’ the road dangerously close to the electricity poles.
The gram sabha also raised concern over the poor condition of the structure housing balwadi in the village, and lack of basic facilities at the rural medical dispensary, where there is neither sitting arrangement nor drinking water facility for the patients.
