Weeks after the Carmona gram sabha unanimously passed a resolution opposing a housing project by Raheja, the opposition voices against the project are getting louder with the villagers getting support from different quarters.
A meeting called by the Carmona Villagers Committee was attended by hundreds of villagers and also got the backing of the Council for Social Justice and Peace in opposing the housing project by the real estate developer on a plot of 89,000 sq mts.
The meeting unanimously decided to form ward-wise committees to bring about awareness among the villagers on the Raheja project, Zalor beach and plan for the overall development of the village, and vowed to take the ongoing movement to a logical conclusion.
Speaking at the meeting, Bair Rodrigues, president of the Carmona Villagers Committee, said that the villagers are opposed to the project proposed on 89,000 square metre of land in the village as it will put a tremendous stress on the village resources like water and power if it comes up.
The movement got a shot in the arm when Fr Savio Fernandes, executive secretary of the Council for Social Justice and Peace, extended support for the movement against the housing project. He said that “it is the constitutional right of the villagers of Carmona to protest and take decisions on what is good for them.”
He also said that “the villagers should decide on the nature of development that should take place in their village,” and called upon the elected representatives to take note of the sentiments of the people while taking decisions.
Speaking on the occasion, activist John Pereira informed the congregation that other NGOs like the Voice of Villagers, Village Groups of Goa and others will also extend their support in opposing the mega housing project in the village.
He also reminded the villagers of Carmona that concerted efforts from the people in the past have led to the scraping of SEZ in the state.
