Aghast with the panchayat’s decision, the committee held a meeting on Friday to discuss the issue. VC president Blair Rodrigues stated, “It is a deliberate attempt to avoid the villagers. Many people were expected to attend this gram sabha, and thus Orlando resorted to this tactic of postponement.

“However, Carmona Deputy Sarpanch Orlando da Silva stated that the change of venue required approval from the Salcete block development officer and that the panchayat had applied for the same.

Blair felt that Orlando was only being technical and that there was no need to approach the directorate of education when the gram sabha could have been held at the panchayat ground.

“We have been verifying all recent developments, and at this meeting, we will also inform the public about what we plan to do and hear what they have to say as well,” said VC spokesperson Socorro Miranda, adding that other villages have also been invited to the meeting.

When asked if the VC was going to invite the panchayat, Socorro said it would be a public meeting and not a gram sabha as the panchayat had chosen to postpone the meeting. He stated that the postponement proved that the deputy sarpanch wanted to avoid the public.

Meanwhile, the villagers have welcomed the resignation of Sarpanch Lavita Dias. They view it as her accepting their demand to quit on the Raheja issue. They also requested the government and panchayat use their resources and energy to prepare a blueprint for the village’s development instead of helping the real estate lobby to set up projects in Carmona.

At the village committee meeting, the villagers are expected to chalk out action against the panchayat.
