The village panchayat of Carmona has taken to improving conditions of the anganwadi cum dispensary after repeated complaints and requests to concerned departments. After repeated requests to the department the panchayat has also managed to increase the number of doctor visit days to the dispensary located in the same building from two to three times a week.

In October last year, the panchayat along with officials from the department of health services and education conducted a site inspection to reveal poor outdoor and indoor conditions of the building. The request for a full time doctor was also made during the inspection.

The panchayat thus decided to clean up the surroundings of the building, repair the boundary and beautify the surroundings. Speaking to this daily, sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas said, “Through a proposal taken up during the general body meeting, it was resolved to repair the surroundings of the building.”

The compound wall around the building was repaired by partly doing away with a sharp corner that had in the past been dangerous for commuters. The area now has a parking area after getting the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the education department.

Local panch Alwyn Jorge who has spearheaded work on the building said it was an achievement and added that he was hopeful more work would be taken up under funds provided through the Zilla Parishad.

“Under ZP funds we have put a proposal to have separate attached toilets for health staff and anganwadi. The children’s park with multiple play rides and a walking track have also been proposed under ZP in the premises of the government primary school at George Vaddo as part of the beautification process of the village heritage site,” said Jorge.

He however added that the building was still in need of urgent repairs as the monsoons would further damage the false ceiling. He also expressed gratitude and welcomed the health services efforts to increase the doctor’s visit.

“This is an old heritage site and a school dear to many senior citizens of Carmona whose sight evokes happy memories when they as children were initiated into what was then called ‘Escola Primaria.’ It was here life towards education began for every child of the village. Every village in Goa invariably has one such ‘Escola Primaria’ and these sites as heritage buildings need to be saved,” he added.
