The Carmona village panchayat, which after months recently got its full-time sarpanch, will be focusing on tackling garbage and Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) at its gram sabha to be held on January 13.
Speaking to this daily, the newly-elected sarpanch Allwyn Jorge said that garbage and development works for the village would be his priority. “During the panchayat’s general body meeting that was held on Saturday, we have decided to increase the frequency of garbage collection and to levy a garbage collection fee that will be put up for discussion at the gram sabha to be convened on January 13, 2019,” said Jorge.
The plan is also to organise a village panchayat field trip along with members of the village garbage committee to the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) plant at Saligao as well as a presentation by the officials of corporation to be arranged for as a firsthand experience.
Jorge also said that the plan to hire daily-wage staff for garbage handling and sorting by the panchayat would be put up before the gram sabha for approval. To handle the problem of identifying land for the collection and segregation of garbage, the panchayat body has decided to approach the church and communidade for land for waste handling facility so as to shift the existing facility that is currently housed in the panchayat property.
“Since taking charge of the panchayat on December 12, the panchayat has collected and sorted about 3.6 tonne of dry waste that have been picked up by GWMC. We want to take up the issue of garbage management with seriousness and get a proper solution,” he said.
Since the resignation of the last sarpanch, the Village Development Committee (VDC) and administration at the panchayat have been affected. The panchayat has now written to the BDO to help clear internal roads of wild bushes and plants that are causing obstruction to passersby who move on foot and by vehicles.
The panchayat is also likely to miss the December 31 deadline to submit its GPDP for which the panchayat has requested the BDO’s office for an extension due to the delay in forming the panchayat body.
