A group led by former MLA Kiran Kandolkar met Mapusa PI and demanded action against sarpanch, deputy sarpanch and secretary of Thivim panchayat for allegedly illegally impounding cattle.
The panchayat, however, has claimed that farmers tied the cattle as they destroyed crops and the panchayat had tried to settle the issue.
On Thursday morning, BJP Thivim Mandal led by Kandolkar met Mapusa PI Tushar Lotlikar and enquired about a complaint that was lodged by a cattle owner Mali Kharvat against panchayat officials claiming that their buffaloes were tied illegally and they were starving without food and water. Cattle owner Ulhas Kharvat and his wife Mali Kharvat had accompanied the former MLA.
Kandolkar alleged that “Kharvat’s family is being pressurised to withdraw the complaint and being threatened by panchayat of demolishing their house.”
However, Thivim panchayat members including sarpanch Trupti Shinde, deputy sarpanch Shivdas Kambli in the presence of panchayat secretary clarified that panchayat had no role in the whole incident. Panchayat had received a written complaint on November 24 from farmers of Bodiem-Thivim about cattle belonging to Ulhas Kharvat and another person entering fields and damaging crops and famers had kept the cattle tied in an open space, it was stated.
Deputy sarpanch Shivdas Kambli informed that “acting on the letter we sent a notice to the owner to remain present in the panchayat to discuss the issue. They had a discussion wherein the owner had assured that they would not let their cattle to wander. However, farmers, who had tied the cattle, were demanding a compensation of Rs 8000.” A report has been sent on the issue by the panchayat, Shivdas stated.
