The Cavelossim panchayat has resolved to ask the government to increase the funds from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh as the village panchayat was finding it very difficult to make ends meet.
Speaking to this daily, sarpanch Dionizio Dias said the current amount being given to the panchayat was not enough for collection and segregation of waste in the village.
He said, “At the last gram sabha, it was resolved to write to the government to increase the garbage fund, and after our meeting, we have also decided to write to the government to increase the funds.”
Currently, a private contractor hired by the panchayat collects garbage from around 485 households once a week. It is then taken to a shed where the contractor arranges to segregate the garbage. From here, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) collects the segregated garbage from the shed once in 15 days.
During the last panchayat body meeting a decision was taken to ask the government to increase the amount given for development from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.
Dias said that the panchayat was facing another problem after the government asked panchayat bodies to resolve the land acquisition issues themselves. “The government has said if there are any local development projects that are to be taken we as the panchayat will have to take care of the land acquisition ourselves. This has become a problem to the panchayat,” he said.
He said that under the beach development plan for coastal villages, any land acquisitions for putting additional infrastructure on the beach was to be taken up by the panchayat themselves.
