Chaos reigned supreme at the monthly panchayat body meeting at Carmona on Thursday after panch member Devina Rodrigues made a dramatic U-turn and backtracked on her earlier stance opposing Raheja housing project.
This time round, Rodrigues joined hands with three other panch members to oppose the serving of show cause notice to the Rahejas over the project, while upset villagers demonstrated for over four hours demanding that the panchayat members take steps to rectify their earlier mistakes and revoke the construction licence to the project.
It may be recalled that Rodrigues had expressed her opposition to the Raheja project and was one of the signatories to the resolution seeking that the construction licence to the project be revoked.
Heavy police personnel were present at the village panchayat as the demonstration witnessed some tense moments and villagers were not allowing the panch members to leave the panchayat premises until they issued a show cause notice.
Speaking to media, members of the Carmona Villagers Forum said they were only holding a peaceful demonstration and seeking accountability from the panchayat members. “We want to save our village and have genuine concerns and hence want accountability on the part of the elected panch members,” they said.
Panch members Orlando da Silva, Sandra Fernandes, Xavier Fernandes and Devina Rodrigues remained adamant that no show cause notice will be served to Rahejas unless the government acts on the TCP observations.
Sarpanch Lavita Dias put the matter to vote saying that the panchayat had sufficient grounds to serve show cause notice to Rahejas as to why the construction licence should not be revoked.
Noisy scenes were witnessed for nearly an hour after the panch members were held up inside the conference room as the villagers demanded their resignation.
Fearing a law and order situation, the police personnel present at the panchayat called senior officials as the villagers expressed their willingness to court arrest claiming that they wanted a positive response from the elected representatives. The matter was eventually defused after the intervention of senior police officials.
The Carmona Villagers Forum members, however, warned that they would continue their fight against the Raheja project.
Later, speaking to reporters, the sarpanch said the four panch members did not support a resolution to serve a show cause notice to the Raheja project which resulted in chaos after the meeting ended and villagers expressed
