The gram sabha of Chicalim panchayat unanimously opposed the shifting of casinos to the Chicalim bay. They also appealed to the panchayat to write a letter to the Indian Navy, which has its naval armament depot at Chicalim beach, about the suspected relocation of the casinos.

The gram sabha has appealed that efforts should be made to declare the Chicalim-Sancoale bay as a biodiversity heritage site under sections of the Biological Diversity Act 2002 and the Biological Diversity Rule, 2004.

Villagers were of the view that the casino will not just add to the garbage worries of the village, but also influence vices and antisocial activities. They also felt such a move will pose immense threat to the naval armament depot, which needs to be guarded.

The Chicalim panchayat has identified a place of 5,500sq m for a garbage treatment plant in the village. On Monday There will be a meeting of all stake holders along with Navy’s Flag Officer Goa Area (FOGA) as the land identified is in the vicinity of their depot.
