Chicalim gram sabha, on Sunday, unanimously resolved to oppose the state government’s decision to set up a marina along the Zuari bank near Sancoale.A social activist Rui Araujo raised the issue. Araujo brought to the notice of the gram sabha that Sancoale bay has been declared as an eco-sensitive area by the Goa State Bio-Diversity Board.  “It is also a spawning ground for the window pane oysters,” he said objecting to the move of the state government to set up the project there.

After some discussion, a resolution objecting to the Marina project was then adopted by the gram sabha members.
The villagers also resolved to seek inspection by the Goa State Pollution Control Board of water bodies in the panchayat jurisdiction, as contamination due to the discharge of sewerage and oil is suspected.

A panch member Neelam Naik appreciated the move of Araujo to oppose the Marina project. She also raised the issue of mega housing project which could ‘destroy the ecosystem of Chicalim.’

The villagers rejected a proposal to hike certain taxes.

Speaking on the Dabolim airport issue, a panchayat member Francisco Nunes stressed on the need to strengthen the movement to retain Dabolim airport as the only airport in the state.

Later, the gram sabha passed a resolution seeking to retain Dabolim as the only airport in Goa.
