Chicalim villagers barged into the premises of a government school and stopped the work of installation of mobile towers for the upcoming Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) summit.
Addressing the villagers, acting sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav condemned the installation of towers, while accusing the government of forcing its decisions on the panchayat. “The Centre has poured money into the state to develop infrastructure ahead of the BRICS summit but nothing should be at the cost of the people.”
Fr Michael Fernandes added, “By BRICS coming in Goa nothing will change for common man. We will fight the injustice but it shall be a peaceful agitation.”
The villagers displayed an order issued by the director of education, G P Bhat, permitting the installation of mobile towers at three locations — government primary schools at Navelim in Sancoale, Benaulim in Salcete and Chicalim in Mormugao.
