Chimbel Panchayat is set for a showdown with Union High School as it has resolved to ask the school authorities to vacate the room where its office and computer laboratory are located, even as the school headmaster expressed his inability to comply.

The decision by the panchayat comes on the backdrop of Bekti Primary Health Centre HO Dr Celina Noronha’s letter urging the panchayat to provide a premises since the Directorate of Health Services has decided to set up a non-bedded primary health in the village.

Speaking to Herald, Sarpanch Shruti Kunkalikar said the panchayat doesn’t want to miss this golden opportunity of having a PHC in the village since it has been a demand of the villagers for a long time and hence they have decided to ask Union HS to vacate the room occupied by it on the ground floor so that it can be used for the PHC.

Kunkalikar further informed that the school authorities have been advised to shift their office and the computer laboratory in the panchayat hall where the stage exists.

Headmaster Arun Nagvenkar questioned the rationale behind such move from the VP when the school is still not having its own building.

“When the Union HS was shifted in the panchayat premises, at the insistence of the PTA, the panchayat had clearly agreed that the school will be allowed to use the premises till alternate arrangement is made,” Nagvenkar informed while showing a copy of the NOC signed in 2006 by the then sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar, who is presently the deputy sarpanch. “The VP has even agreed to waive off the rent since 95% of the students are from Chimbel,” he further added.

Nagvenkar said shifting office and computer lab is not a viable option as the VP hall is not secured and there is a possibility of theft. “I have apprised of the situation to the school management who have also expressed inability to shift,” he informed. But, as a solution, Nagvenkar said the VP should look to resolve the issues pertaining to the land behind the panchayat which was acquired way back in the 1980s for building a school and a playground.
