Villagers of Pirna on Sunday demanded that the panchayat carry out agriculture-based projects and try to bring in a scheme pertaining to agriculture for the villagers.
The ordinary gram sabha of the village panchayat held on Sunday was presided over by the sarpanch Meeta Naik along with panchayat secretary Marino Barreto. Villagers demanded that they do not want any artificial development instead want development based on agriculture as most of villagers are into farming.
A villager expressing unhappiness over budgetary provision made by the panchayat said that no provision has been made for agriculture sector and demanded to have a special gram sabha.
Villager Tukaram Parab suggested using funds under 14th Finance Commission for agriculture-related works instead of using it for regular work.
Panchayat secretary informed, “We will have to check whether the funds under 14th Finance Commission can be used or not for agriculture-related works.”
Another villager brought to the notice of the panchayat that despite the Tillari irrigation project passing through the village farmers are unable to use its water for agriculture purpose and demanded the panchayat to do a follow up with the project officials.
The gram sabha also unanimously passed a resolution to oppose nationalisation of rivers and coal transportation in the state. Tukaram Parab said, “Eighty-five per cent of panchayats in the state have opposed both the projects as they are not in the interest of Goa. Coal transportation has caused a lot of respiratory problems for people of Vasco and if same is allowed everywhere then people will have to suffer.”
He also said, “Even the widening of national highway is being done to make way for coal transportation.”
