Consua villagers have raised objection over hill cutting activity which is going on unabated behind the Blue Berry Hill hall in Consua in the jurisdiction of village panchayat of Cortalim Quelossim.

The villagers have alleged that the contractor, who has been awarded the contract to construct Margao bypass, is carrying out hill excavation work for the last eight days. “Heavy boulders and rubbles are being transported from the top of the hill behind the Blue Berry Hill hall”, said a villager. It was revealed that the land belongs to the Cortalim comunidade.

“We were surprised to know that the town and country planning department has granted permission to excavate the hill,” stated Tito Cardozo.

Another villager informed that there is a threat to the tunnel of the Konkan Railway Corporation due to the excavation of hill which is being on a large scale.

“The work could cause severe damage to environment and also pose threat to the tunnel of the KRCL,” said a villager, speaking on condition of anonymity. The agitated villagers have informed the Cortalim Quelossim panchayat through a representation about the hill cutting work. The villagers have sought immediate action on it.

Sarpanch Hilario Figueiredo has claimed that he had forwarded a representation made by the villagers to the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao, for necessary action. The complaint copy has also been forwarded to town and country planning department, public works department and other concerned authorities including Verna police.

Meanwhile, when contacted the officials of the company which is engaged in excavation of hill at Consua, it was disclosed that they have obtained all the necessary permissions from the concerned department. “There is no illegality and the excavation is done only to serve the purpose of bypass road,” said an official of the company.
