Canacona police have registered an offence against police constable of the Canacona police station, working as a driver, for biting hand of sarpanch of the Cotigao village panchayat.

Police said that based on the complaint lodged, an offence under Sections 324 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against police constable Genu Velip for causing hurt and abusing sarpanch Umesh Gaonkar.

Police said that the incident occurred on Saturday morning when the said police constable was on his way to report for duty. As per the complaint lodged at the police station, the alleged accused Velip entered into an argument with the sarpanch and later in a fit of anger bit his hand.

According to police, there is some dispute between the police constable and the sarpanch and the case is being investigated. Police also said that the sarpanch has been admitted to Hospicio Hospital in Margao.

“We will record statements in connection with the case,” said a police officer. He, however, said that both the sections applied are bailable and that the said constable will be arrested and released on bail.

Police also said that after conducting an inquiry into the incident, a report will be submitted to Superintendent of Police, South Goa for appropriate action.
