The opposition panchas of Cortalim panchayat and as some locals have raised serious concerns over the way the officials have finalized delimitation of wards for the forthcoming elections that would be held in next few months.
They complained that the delimitation of wards have been done without considering actual geographical boundaries and therefore if the same is not corrected, then, they are all prepared to approach the court seeking justice.Opposition panch Raymond D’Sa said that, after the government approved and notified bifurcation of Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat into two separate panchayats, the Cortalim Panchayat authorities began with the process of delimitation of wards in both these villages.
However, he said, the draft plan of delimitation of wards have been prepared without considering actual geographical boundaries, giving advantage to some leader in the forthcoming panchayat polls. Before the bifurcation, Cortalim and Quelossim jointly had 11 wards, and after bifurcation Cortalim will have 11 wards, while Quelossim will consist of seven wards. “We have no objection to the way draft delimitation plan for Quelossim panchayat has been prepared.
However, in Cortalim delimitation plan of some wards have been altered with some sort of political influence. For example, in other wards the average number of voters is maintained at 400, however, ward number six consists of 600-odd voters, which is unfair,” D’Sa said. “I have complained about delimitation discrepancies to officials the concerned including Mormugao BDO; and if the draft delimitation plan is not corrected, then, I am prepared to approach the court,” D’Sa threatened.
Meanwhile, refuting the allegations, Cortalim Sarpanch Hilario Figueiredo claimed that the process of delimitation of wards was done by the panchayat secretary and not by him. He said that if any panch or locals have any objection with draft delimitation plan of Cortalim, then, they should place their grievance before competent authority so that the issue can be addressed.
