Interestingly, around 4,500 households will avail the services free of cost. The garbage collection has been outsourced to a private agency, informed Sarpanch Hilario Figueiredo.
According to Figueiredo, the villagers had pulled up the panchayat on the garbage issue in almost all gram sabhas in the last one-and-a-half years, and the same was solved after the intervention of local MLA and RDA Minister Alina Saldanha.
“In almost all gram sabhas, the villagers have blamed and criticized the panchayat for the growing garbage menace in the villages.
With every passing day, the complaints over the increasing dumping of garbage along the road, roadside drains, in private properties and open spaces had increased, but we were helpless as the file to appoint a garbage contractor and to start door-to-door garbage collection remained pending before the Block Development Officer for almost a year.
However, to our luck, the file was recently cleared. We have appointed a contractor who will be responsible for the door-to-door collection of garbage.
“The Cortalim-Quelossim panchayat has also moved a proposal before the State administration to acquire about 5,000 square meters of land from the Cortalim comunidade to dispose of the collected garbage.
However, to immediately start disposing the collected garbage, the panchayat has managed to obtain an NOC from the Cortalim comunidade.”We want to make Cortalim-Quelossim garbage-free, and the door-to-door garbage collection is the first step towards this goal.
Once this is streamlined and becomes successful, we will concentrate on strictly enforcing the ban on plastic in the panchayat’s jurisdiction,” said Figueiredo.
