Cortalim Quelossim gram sabha, which was held on Sunday, resolved to oppose the relocation of offshore casinos in the Zuari rivulet and also raised voice against the proposed Marina projects, in order to protect the marine ecology.
The gram sabha was chaired by the sarpanch Hilario Figuereido.
Minister for Science and Environment Alina Saldanha also attended the meeting. The villagers also resolved that Konkani should be made into a compulsory subject from class I to X. A resolution pertaining to the demand will be sent to the state government.
The gram sabha also demanded that the state government should continue providing grants to the English medium schools.
The villagers also strongly opposed the anchoring of a cruise liner off the Cortalim jetty.
“The inspection of the anchored cruise liner will be held in attendance of captain of ports officials, local fishermen, panchayat authorities and local MLA Saldanha,” said Sarpanch Figuereido.
He, however, said that the date pertaining to the inspection of the cruise liner will be fixed by the panchayat authorities shortly.
The others issues which were discussed include illegal scrap yards, parking of barges along the river bank that obstructs local fishermen in fishing activity, Regional Plan 2021, and improper laying of underground cables by the Reliance company which has led to potholes on the roads.
The issue of bifurcation of the panchayat into two was also discussed.
