Upset with the state BJP government for not fulfilling the crucial demand for providing separate Panchayat status to Quelossim village which is presently part of Cortalim-Quelossim village Panchayat, despite several resolutions taken by the Gram Sabha members in past, the villagers along with the Panchayat body have demanded that the BJP government should prove with action that the assurance to fulfill Bifurcation demand before code of conduct for forthcoming assembly polls is not just any other election dole.

The demand was made during the one day hunger strike called by all eleven Panch members of Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat body. The strike saw a lot of participation by large number of villagers from twins village of Cortalim and Quelossim and supported by Cortalim Zilla Panchayat Member Anthony Vas.

Speaking to reporters, Sarpanch Hilario Figuereido claimed that the bifurcation issue has been prolonging since last nine years and during each Gram Sabha the members have been accusing the body for not doing follow up with the government but in reality the leaders have been busy giving doles to them.

“This would be the first time in the history after Goa liberation that Panchayat body along with the villagers were forced to hold hunger strike, only to put pressure on the government to fulfill genuine demand which is attached to the sentiments of the people and we feel that government is fooling the people by giving doles before elections,” he said.

Panch Member Raymond Desa as well as Anita Kenkre said that “It is a matter of record that, after BJP government came to power in 2012; the bifurcation proposal which was in final stage was arbitrarily kept aside citing some issues. Sadly government does not understand that people have been only fighting to protect the identity of Quelossim village so that once Quelossim village is separated from Cortalim development would take speed here”.
