The Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat has decided to go ahead with its one-day hunger strike on Tuesday despite RDA Minister and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha’s concrete assurance that the pending bifurcation issue of the panchayat into two separate villages would be resolved before code of conduct for 2017 assembly elections comes into force.

According to sarpanch Hilario Figuereido, the demand for a separate panchayat status for Quelossim village having 80 percent ST population has been pending for the last ten years and likewise in past, even this time an assurance to fulfill their demand has been given just before Assembly elections but there is no guarantee that the same would be fulfilled or would be like any other pre-poll promise.

“It is always that just before any elections the leaders have been making promises that the demand for separate panchayat status to Quelossim village would be fulfilled, Similarly, we still remember that during the last Lok Sabha elections, the then chief minister and the present Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had visited our village and had publicly announced that he would fulfill our demand after the Lok Sabha elections but even after two-and-half years the issue is yet to be resolved,” Figuereido informed.

“We took the issue aggressively and decided to hold hunger strike for not fulfilling our demands. Our MLA Alina came forward and assured that the demand would be fulfilled before elections.

Though we still hope that the same would be fulfilled but in order to grab the attention of the State government, we have decided not to defer our hunger strike and to hold the same on Tuesday,” Figuereido added.
