The ruling members of the Cortalim Village Panchayat have strongly opposed the proposed diversion of traffic from Cortalim village – MDR road, terming the decision as unplanned and without taking the local body besides villagers and farmers into confidence.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Cortalim sarpanch Angela Furtado said that the government authorities involving the PWD Minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and officials of the PWD, national highways and other concerned departments have not taken into confidence the local panchayat members, farmers and even villagers while drawing plans for the proposed diversion of traffic due to the construction work of the new Zuari Bridge.
“The panchayat authorities, farmers and the villagers have been kept in the dark over the diversion of traffic”, alleged Furtado.
The deputy sarpanch of Cortalim Panchayat said, “The traffic diversion on NH66 through MDR road in Cortalim has been decided without confiding with the local body and understanding the bottlenecks and other issues. The traffic diversion will disturb the entire traffic movement”.
He said that the diversion of traffic from MDR road has been planned in a haphazard manner.
“The proposed diversion plan will not only disturb the villagers of Cortalim but it would affect all vehicles and commuters who will land in traffic jam for hours which is being experienced at the Cortalim highway and Zuari Bridge”, said De Sa.
Panch member Anita Kenkre said, “We want development, but not at the cost and risk of the public at large”. She disclosed that due to the movement of vehicles, along the narrow roads in Cortalim, there will be a serious question on safety aspects of villagers, leading to accidents and chaos”.
She raised doubts over the time frame for completing the work of the new Zuari bridge.
