The battle against the Raheja project in Carmona received a big boost with the Council for Social justice and Peace extending its support to the villagers, even as villagers came under the banner of Carmona Villagers’ Committee (CVC) on Monday to take the ongoing movement to its logical conclusion.

Headed by Blair Rodrigues, the CVC has also constituted ward-wise committees to bring about awareness amongst the villagers on the Raheja project, and other issues, including Zalor beach and plan for the village’s overall development.

Addressing the meeting, Executive Secretary of the Council for Social Justice and Peace Fr Savio Fernandes said the CSJP will extend all-out support to the villagers to fight for their rights. He said the villagers are the real deciders of the nature of development that should take place in their village, adding that the elected members should take note of the aspirations and sentiments of the people while taking decisions. “It is the constitutional right of Carmona villagers to protest and take decisions on what is best and good for them. Villagers are the rightful persons to decide on what is good for the village,” Fr Savio said.

In his address, activist John Philip Pereira reminded Carmona villagers that it was people’s strength and unity that led to the scrapping of the SEZs in Goa. While saluting the villagers for the battle against the Rajeha project, Pereira said the NGOs such as the Voice of Villagers, Village Groups of Goa would support the cause of the villagers in the battle against the mega housing project.

Even as the villagers attended the meeting inside the hall, a banner asking Rahejas not to dominate over Carmona and stop the project was prominently displayed outside.

After the meeting, CVC President Blair Rodrigues told Herald the Committee will fight against the mega housing project. “Rahejas has purchased our village land admeasuring 89,000 sq mts. If they are permitted to build a housing project, the villagers will have to share resources like water and power,” he said.

He also disclosed plans to take up the issue of getting the 1.5 km Zalor beach back to Carmona and also prepare a village development plan for the benefit of  the villagers.
