With the work on the Indira Nagar culvert at Chimbel showing no signs of completion, the Santa Barbara Chapel devotees took their grievances to the Chimbel Panchayat and urged them to direct the PWD officials to complete the work at the earliest so that they are not inconvenienced while entering the chapel.
It may be recalled that Herald had highlighted how the mud dumped near the culvert had made the entire area muddy and caused problems to the devotees as they have to use this road while entering the chapel.
At the gram sabha on Sunday, the chapel devotees blamed the PWD authorities for the slow pace of work on one pretext or the other and questioned whether Chimbel is purposely neglected.
A devotee, Mathew Quadros, also sought to know why the work was undertaken in a hurry just before the onset of monsoon if the PWD knew that it would be problematic for them to complete the work during the monsoon.
Quadros also questioned the panchayat whether they had given NOC for the work. When deputy Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar replied in the negative, a resolution was passed that henceforth all government agencies undertaking developmental activities in the village should seek NOC from the panchayat and if they fail to do so, a criminal complaint should be filed against them.
Meanwhile, another devotee and former panch Hazel Fernandes informed Herald that since the past three months the water supply connection of Santa Barbara Chapel has been disconnected, thereby causing inconvenience to the devotees.
When Kunkolkar was apprised of the matter, he assured to look into both the issues.
“I will write to the PWD (roads) to complete the work on the Indira Nagar culvert within one month,” he said while also assuring that he would urge the water supply division to restore the water connection of the chapel.
