Mayem farmers took out a morcha in Bicholim on Tuesday under the banner of Mayem Kisan Sabha, an association of farmers from Mayem, Bicholim in support of their long pending demands.
The morcha was stopped by police in front of the Bicholim taluka government building complex. The farmers were demanding compensation for losses due to the flowing of mining rejects into their fields thereby incurring heavy losses.
The villagers who are mostly farmers have brought this problem to the notice of the government from time to time but no action has been taken. The delegation of farmers under the leadership of Adv Jatin Naik and president of MKS Kashinath Gadekar called on deputy collector Narayan Gad and submitted a memorandum to him. The main demands include compensation to be paid to the farmers by mine owners, de-silting of Mayem lake as the water is used for irrigation purposes by farmers.
Deputy collector Narayan Gad assured to look into the matter and added that he would forward their memorandum of demands to the government authorities for further action.
“If Mayem farmers’ demands are not fulfilled before the scheduled time, the farmers would be left with no other option but to start their agitation in support of their demands”, Kamalakant Gadekar president of MKS said.
