Source/Reference: Herald, “Furore in House over purchase of agri land by foreigners

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai raised a furore in the House over foreign nationals buying agricultural land in the already beleaguered state where large chunks of land are being sold to non-Goans and land is going beyond the reach of middle class Goans.

Sardesai pointed out to a case of two German nationals of Indian origin who have acquired land at Arpora measuring 13,500 sq metres. He further alleged that the party had sought permission for use of the land for residential purpose but had converted the same for commercial purpose in violation of the law.

Calangute MLA Michael Lobo also requested the government to create a website giving information to foreigners on this issue of land purchase. He alleged that lawyers are misguiding them.

As they are of Indian origin quite possibly the purchase was legitimate .
However, the conversion could not have been done without the cooperation of
local authorities and this is the main problem in Goa .
Many panchayats are corrupt and issuing NOC’s etc without any control
from responsible land officials as to whether the intended purpose is suited to the location of property and without regard as to whether proper sanitation etc is
available. This is especially true in Bardez taluka.
