Sarpanch of Santa Cruz Mariano Araujo said that the panchayat has started door-to-door garbage collection on October 2, and “we (panchayat) have also opened a garbage collection centre, but without the co-operation of the people we won’t be able to achieve success in our mission.”

The sarpanch informed that “we (panchayat) have started collecting door-to-door wet garbage everyday and dry garbage twice a week, and have kept two garbage bins – green for plastic bottles and red for glass bottles.”

“You know some disgruntled elements and anti-socials, who cannot see me doing good for the people of the village, are throwing garbage in the bins meant for plastic bottles and glass bottles, and they also throw garbage outside the bins,” he added.

“Nobody took any initiative to start door-to-door garbage collection but when I started, some became jealous,” he said adding but “I will not get disheartened. Instead will continue to serve the village and would install metal bins to collect garbage.”

The stray dogs and other animals roaming in these wards feast on the littered garbage and spread it to the roads and create nuisance, which inconveniences the garbage collectors, pedestrians, and motorists, he added.

“You know, the last panchayat body was penalised by the authorities for burning plastic waste along with other garbage,’’ he said adding people are throwing carcasses of pigs and dogs in the bins meant for bottles and plastic.

He said that in the near future, the panchayat will have collection centres in every ward to keep the area clean and to contribute our (village) might to the mission of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi – ‘Nitol Goem’ and ‘Swachh Bharat.’

“We (panchayat) had started with the garbage collection by taking all the panchas into confidence and had discussed the issue with the Village Development Committee and they had all extended their co-operation to me,’’ he said adding presently,

the panchayat is using private vehicles for collecting and transporting garbage and have employed 22 women from the village for garbage collection.
