Reacting to the recently held one-day long hunger strike by Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat members, the Goenchea Ramponkaranchea Ekvott (GRE) Joint General Secretary and Cortalim AAP candidate Olencio Simoes has said that dividing the villages is not an good idea and instead, the government and panchayat should work for the upliftment of the ST community in the entire Cortalim constituency and Goa as a whole.

“The move of Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat to go on a one-day hunger strike is just a ploy and an attempt to divert the attention from the main issue of ‘Mini India Park’ at Quelossim.

Sarpanch Hilario Figuereido failed to even carry out basic development works at Cortalim or Quelossim and now is fooling the innocent people of Quelossim by exploiting them in the name of ST community,” Simoes said.He also criticised the government as well as local MLA Alina Saldanha for assuring to bifurcate Quelossim from Cortalim Panchayat before code of conduct.

He termed the promise as an election gimmicks to woo Quelossim villagers before election. “Rather than fooling the innocent SC/ST people of Quelossim, the local MLA should concentrate on solving people’s basic needs like water supply, uninterrupted electricity, sanitation, footpaths, roads, education and jobs which the local MLA failed to provide even after being a minister,” Simoes said.

“Quelossim has less than 2000 people and Zuarinagar has 11,000 people; will the government bifurcate Zuarinagar from Sancoale Panchayat? Proper application of mind is required before taking such major step in dividing the villages which according to me is not a good idea,” he said.
