The special gram sabha of the Calangute village panchayat held on Republic Day on Friday was rocked by the issues of illegal construction atop a hill near Bonviage and the release of sewage allegedly from hotels into a nullah.

Villagers questioned the panchayat secretary over the delay in demolishing the illegal construction and accused him of misguiding them. A villager Antonio said that the panchayat is empowered to demolish the illegal construction under Section 64 J of the panchayat act.

The panchayat secretary said that the process is underway to demolish the said structure as it will affect the orphanage and home for the aged in its vicinity.

Another villager Sameer brought to the notice of the special gram sabha that hotels at Khobrawado are releasing sewage in a nullah and complaints are filed but no action has been taken by the panchayat and the authorities. Some villagers also brought to the notice that a villager has constructed a shop blocking the nullah at Khobrawado.

The secretary told the gram sabha that panchanama has been done on the illegal shop constructed over the nullah and action will be taken against hotels releasing sewage.

The villagers also asked the panchayat to inspect all the nullahs in the village and identify if encroachments have been done or sewage water is being released and accordingly to take action.

Cyrico Dias, a freedom fighter from Calangute brought to the notice of the special gram sabha that beggars are being brought in van in Calangute and this needs to be stopped. A villager claimed that beggars who were evicted from Arpora are no staying in shanties between Bodgovod and Palmerina hotel in Calangute and need to be evicted.

Villagers also questioned the panchayat over action taken against illegal constructions in fields in Calangute. The panchayat secretary said that show cause notices have been served and the process has been started to remove all the illegal structures.
