Isabelle Pereira won the Raia village panchayat byelections to ward number 7 which was held on Sunday. Pereira secured 311 votes while her closest competitor Maria Mascarenhas secured 164 votes. 66.25% voters cast their votes in the polls on Sunday while the counting of votes took place on Monday.
“Isabelle was backed by the ruling panchayat members and we will work together for the development of her ward and the entire panchayat,” said Xavier Fernandes, Raia panch member.
Pereira, Mascarenhas and Queeny D’Costa were the candidates for the poll which were necessitated following the resignation of the Raia panchayat member Espy Rodrigues representing that ward. The seat is reserved for women.
The polling passed off peacefully and there were no untoward incidents. Approximately 12,000 people live in the 11 wards that comprise the total size of the Raia panchayat said panchayat officials. The state election commission had on May 15 announced the polling date for the by-election.
