Lavita Dias was elected unopposed as the sarpanch of Carmona, while Orlando Da Silva submitted his resignation from the post of deputy sarpanch. Violence also marred the day as local youth damaged the panchayat ghar and assaulted panch Carlos Jorge.Four of the seven panchas were absent.
Amongst them, was Divina Rodrigues, who along with three other panchas had tried to move a resolution at the last panchayat meeting against the construction license issued to Raheja. While the remaining panchas – Lavita Dias, Prisco Rodrigues and Carlos Jorge – turned up, presiding officer M Pawar waited to see if the other four panchas would show up for the special meeting.
As Lavita was the only person to file the nomination, she was elected as the sarpanch. Meanwhile, Orlando was present at the panchayat ghar to submit his resignation from the post of deputy sarpanch.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, he said, “Since the vacancy of sarpanch is now filled and the constitutional void is breached, I have submitted my resignation as deputy sarpanch to give an opportunity to other members to hold the post.”Trouble started after the elections, when some local youth created a ruckus at the panchayat ghar. They also assaulted panch Jorge, who opposed their actions.
The scuffle took place despite police being present. While the matter was taken up with the Colva police, no complaint was registered after the situation was resolved amicably, and the youth being let off with a warning.
