Raising serious health concerns, the residents of Mangor Hill, Vasco have issued a 15-day ultimatum to Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) demanding removal of mobile tower located on top of Shobhan Mahal Apartment at Mangor Hill, failing which they have decided to launch mass protest against the civic body.
After staging a peaceful protest demanding removal of mobile tower on Tuesday, the residents claimed that the mobile tower was installed against their consent and they were waiting for the NOC to expire.
“As the Municipal NOC was given only till 2015, we now fear that MMC might further extend it. We now demand that MMC should start the process of removing the said tower and don’t even think of extending the NOC to the party as we are ready to intensify our protest by confronting the concerned MMC officials,” said Shivaji Patil, a resident of Mangor Hill.
Another resident claimed that the tower was erected by Indus Tower Limited some years back. However, it was only in 2014 that they united and started a move seeking removal of the tower.
“When we understood the ill effects of mobile tower and its radiation, we decided to approach the concerned officials including MMC, health department and even GSPCB. However, they only came to inspect and went without taking any action.
What irked us was the fact that even though the municipal NOC had expired, the concerned party who owns the tower brought additional equipment and started fitting the same to the tower,” said Uma Dhar, a housewife from Mangor Hill.
Annoyed with the lethargic attitude of the MMC officials, the residents sought the help of Vasco police and stopped the work. They allege that as NOC for the said tower has expired; MMC should initiate prompt action and remove the tower within 15 days, failing which the residents are ready to agitate on streets.
