Following two days of protests, farmers in Mayem temporarily withdrew their agitation on Tuesday evening against a mining company, after assurances from Bicholim and Sattari mamlatdars to resolve the compensation issue, related to farms destroyed due to mining silt.
The situation at the mining company got tense on Tuesday morning when company officials refused to meet the farmers. The protesters threatened to break the main gate, but timely intervention by Sattari mamlatdar Shripad Majik and Bicholim DySP Ramesh Gaonkar helped defuse the situation.
Bicholim mamlatdar Gurudas Desai met North Goa collector Neela Mohanan on Tuesday along with mining officials and leaders of the protest group. It was decided to resolve the issue when company officials and farmers meet at the Bicholim mamlatdar’s office at 4pm on November 19.
Till late Monday night, about 150 farmers, under All Goa Kisan Vikas Morcha (AGKVM) banner, stopped workers from entering the company premises, which resulted in the second and third shifts being cancelled.
