The residents of Gaonkarwada, Mayem have demanded with the village panchayat and the concerned authorities to construct speed breakers along the Kelbaiwada-Chimulwada stretch of road in order to prevent accidents.

Former panch member of this area, Mr Kishan Chodankar said, “There is a government primary school between Kelbaiwada and Chimulwada. And so, there are chances of the school children meeting with accidents while crossing the road as the vehicles proceed at high speeds. Hence, there is a need to construct speed breakers on this stretch.”

It is also understood that the then Mayem MLA, Mr Harish Zantye had identified some spots for construction of speed breakers and a notification was also published in the government gazette, however, there was no follow up thereafter.

Meanwhile, the residents of Gaonkarwada in Bicholim have stated that though the concerned authorities constructed speed breakers following their demand, the same have not been constructed at right spots as a result of which freak accidents are being reported.

They also stated that one of the speed breakers near the residence of Mr Gajanan Desai has not been marked. It is understood that a social worker, Mr Govind Sawant has decided to paint this speed breaker in order to prevent accidents.

It is pertinent to note that out of five speed breakers erected there are signboards at only three spots.  The villagers have complained that the speed breakers that are marked with a coat of paint cannot be seen properly as poor quality of paint has been used.  They have therefore demanded with the concerned authorities to put up signboards at the required places and paint the unmarked speed breakers.
