Even though the Vasco station is officially India’s third cleanest under ‘A’ category stations, the officials of Vasco railway station aren’t feeling happy as all their efforts to keep the station area clean turns futile as foul smell continues to greet passengers coming out of the station.

According to Vasco railway station manager, P C Chacko, they have made several representations to the Mormugao Municipal Council as well as the elected leaders seeking their intervention to stop people from urinating in the open area opposite to the main entrance of Vasco railway station as it releases foul smell, but no action has been taken to stop the nuisance.

“The area opposite to the railway station falls under Municipal jurisdiction and thus time and again we have requested the municipal authorities to develop the area which has become an open urinating ground for people.

Sadly our request is yet to receive attention and foul smell greets passengers coming out of the station which is not good for the tourism State of Goa,” he said.

Interestingly, a few weeks ago, to recognise the work done by the Vasco railway officials, Governor Mridula Sinha had felicitated station Manager P C Chacko and Avdesh Kumar, the health inspector Vasco railway station, for cleanliness and thus contributing to Swachh Bharat mission.

To honour their contribution, the station manager was also given an opportunity to address the gathering where Chacko, while assuring to strive in making Vasco railway station as number one station in country, brought to the notice of governor that the area opposite to the station needs to be cleaned.

“What we could do we did. We have raised our issues at the highest level in the State and we now hope that the local body as well as Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida should initiate some steps and maintain cleanliness in the entire area opposite to the Vasco railway station which falls under the jurisdiction of MMC and is being used as urinating ground by the people thereby putting passengers to inconvenience,” Chacko lamented.
