Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has sought permission from Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim panchayat to allow excavators on the beach to tow away a tug washed ashore near the already-grounded pontoon at Arossim.

Local fishermen, water sports operators and others are agitated over the grounding of two vessels and held a demonstration outside the panchayat office demanding suspension of the panchayat secretary for his role in issuing permission for the beach party.

The machinery will be used to excavate the area around the pontoon to enable it to float which will then be towed away. Another pontoon, requisitioned from Mumbai, is likely to arrive by Wednesday evening, sources said.

After the tug is towed away, then Arihant will undertake the major operation of extricating the grounded pontoon. “If it can be pulled one km towards the sea with enough draft for higher capacity tugs, then it may be possible to tow it away,” I Jeyakumar, MPT chairman said.
