The 100 plus residents of Raia and Curtorim, intensifying their protest over the issue of pollution, from the Sonsoddo waste treatment plant site, resulting from the stinking heaps of waste and transportation of mud, threatened to approach the High Court if the transportation of mud is recommenced.
These residents are irked due to the alleged illegal hill cutting and the transportation of mud to Nuvem for the construction of a road.
The Fomento Green, which is constructing the waste treatment plant at Sonsoddo, has refuted the allegations and argued that “it cannot show the documents to the common people.”
“We will approach the High Court to seek justice if the transportation of mud is recommenced. It is sad that somebody is destroying the hill in the name of creating a landfill site and authorities remain the mute spectators to it,’’ alleged Raju Aiyer and Isidore Rodrigues. The protestors charged that the hilly terrain is being largely cut without necessary permissions for it.
“The Fomento Green commenced the trial run in the last December, but even after a year, the company cannot complete the plant,’’ they added.
The protestors informed that the heaps of garbage at the plant and outside the plant stink very badly and that the untreated leachate is flowing down and percolating the ground, causing pollution.
The local MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco did not attend the meeting as he was out of station, the locals informed.
