Navelim village panchayat finds itself in a tight spot over the recovery of tax from the landlords who have rented out premises, as a handful of villagers have raised objections to the panchayat move.
The village panchayat had asked the landlords to register with the panchayat their rented premises and pay a month’s rent per premises rented out as a tax to the panchayat; the registration process had ended at the end of February.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, sarpanch Frank Fernandes said that the panchayat has decided to place the matter before the gram sabha to take a call on the recovery of taxes from the landlords who have rented out their premises.
Fernandes said that while many landlords have registered, some residents from Mandopa have raised objection to the process.
Hence, he said it has now been decided to place the matter before the gram sabha, which will be held later this month, to make suggestions to the panchayat to move forward on the issue.
Ironically, a majority of the houses which have been leased out are built illegally and have been under a constant scanner of the villagers for illegal dumping of garbage, poor sanitation facilities and illegal tapping of electricity.
