Issues concerning proposed bypass roads dominated the proceedings of the gram sabhas of the Nuvem and Loutolim village panchayats on Sunday, with gram sabha members voicing their staunch opposition to the roads.
While at the Nuvem gram sabha, the opposition to the bypass road was mainly out of environmental concerns, it was fear of displacement following demolition of a few houses along the proposed Loutolim-Verna road that sparked the opposition.
In Nuvem, villagers are irked over the haphazard filling of paddy fields which they feel will harm the fragile ecosystem of the area. Villagers also fear that the bypass road will affect migration of birds and also lead to flooding owing to water displacement.
Issues concerning garbage management also figured in the discussion at the gram sabha in Loutolim.
Various other development and civic issued also came to the fore which were passionately discussed.
